Hugo Douglas has set his sights on cementing his spot in Suffolk’s side after taking six wickets on his Unicorns Championship debut.

The Copdock & Old Ipswichian bowler returned figures of 14-6-19-4 as opponents Buckinghamshire were bowled out for 260 in their first innings at the Victory Ground in Bury St Edmunds.

He then followed that up with 9-3-22-2 in the visitors’ second innings as they slumped to 92 for five to still trail Suffolk by 42 runs with only five wickets remaining.

However, Douglas was denied adding to his tally and Suffolk a victory in their opening Championship fixture of the season as heavy rain on Tuesday morning washed-out the third and final day.

Douglas, who stands nearly 6ft, 8in tall, made his Minor Counties bow in Suffolk’s nail-biting six-run Unicorns Trophy success against Bedfordshire at Woolpit a fortnight earlier.

The 21-year-old, who was born in Southampton but has lived in Suffolk for the past 18 years, said: “I thought I did okay, although it was challenging coming into bowl at the end in a pressure situation after they fought their way back into the game.”

Douglas, who lives at Offton and is a first-year year English Literature student at Oxford Brookes, finished without a wicket from his eight overs at a cost of 44 runs.

But with Matt Salisbury called up to play for Hampshire and Copdock team-mate Matt Wareing suffering a back injury, Douglas held his place for the match against Bucks.

Douglas, who has been a regular in Copdock’s East Anglian Premier League side since 2014, continued: “Having taken four-fer (four for 32 against Sudbury) at the weekend, I felt confident going into the county match.

“But I could not have asked for much more, although I was happy just to do my bit for the team. We could not have done much more, so it was a shame about the weather.”

Douglas, who has previously played in trial matches for both Sussex and Middlesex, added: “I would like to establish myself in the team and if any other opportunities come my way that would be fantastic.”
