A primary school football team’s youngest members have been able to hang up their oversized kits, thanks to a grant from a local councillor.

Two dozen children from reception class and Year One at Hardwick Primary in Bury St Edmunds, had faced having to play their first matches in hand-me-down kits used by older pupils.

But then St Edmundsbury Borough councillor Sarah Stamp stepped up to donate £230 from her locality grant to pay for a new kit.

Coach Andy Abbott said: “The new kit really looks great. It was a very proud moment when the team took to the pitch wearing the school colours and they won their first game 5-3.”

This is the first financial year that St Edmundsbury councillors have each been given £2,500 to spend supporting local events or organisations.
