A man in his 50s was found unconscious in the street in Newmarket early this morning having sustained serious head injuries in a mystery attack.

The man is in a critical but stable condition after being found just after midnight this morning, Sunday, August 2.

Police were called to reports that the man was lying unconscious half in the road and half on the pavement in Park Lane in the horseracing town.

The man was later taken to Addenbrookes Hospital for treatment where he remains in a critical condition.

The cause of his injuries is unexplained at this time, with detectives keeping an open mind as to what may have happened to him.

Newmarket town councillor Douglas Hall said: "I am clearly very shocked that this has happened to someone in the centre of the town and that something like this could happen.

"It is shocking that this could happen where someone is left on the street in such a serious state, however it happened.

"Fortunately these things are exceedingly rare in a place like Newmarket but it is worrying that this stuff is happening, and I hope we can get some more information from the police soon to reassure residents that this is an isolated incident.

"The fact that this has happened is deeply concerning but it is not a regular occurrence in town.

"I really hope the man is able to make a full recovery."

Police would like to hear from anyone who was in the area between 11.30pm last night and midnight and saw or heard anything that could assist the investigation.

Any motorists passing through with a dashcam in their vehicle are asked to review the footage and contact officers if they have captured anything of significance that could help with their investigations.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact West CID at Bury St Edmunds police station, quoting reference: 46171/21.
