Bury St Edmunds have appointed Irish rugby legend Kevin Maggs as their new Pro-AM Rugby Director, on a part-time basis.

Maggs, capped 70 times for his country, played for Bath and Bristol, most notably, in England, and also featured six times for the Barbarians.

Bristol-born Maggs (42), who appeared in the 1999 and 2003 World Cups, also represented Ulster during his playing career.

Maggs currently works for the IRFU as part of its new IQ programme where he is a regional talent coach.

He will combine that role with his position at the Haberden, providing coaching, game and player analysis and recruitment and consultancy support, working alongside recently-appointed head coach Jon Clarke.

“I am delighted to be joining Bury St Edmunds Rugby Club in my new role where I will assist Head Coach Jon Clarke and the Pro-am Rugby section.

“I will give my full support to fulfil the club’s ambitions moving forward.

“It’s a club with great facilities and huge potential and I look forward to working with Jon and the team on their continued journey.”

Bury Pro-am chairman, Terry Sands, said: “With 70 caps for Ireland and a wealth of rugby experience in the Championship and beyond, I feel sure Kevin is going to be of huge help to us as part of our exciting journey.”

Maggs joins Bury from Moseley where he has held a number of high level positions and represents part of a new-look coaching set-up at the West Suffolk club, erstwhile head coach Gavin Hogg electing to leave the club at the end of the recent National 2 campaign, to join Old Albanians.

Hogg said last month: “The decision has taken me plenty of time to come to and I know it’s the right one. The opportunity has come at the right time. But I have a young family and I am sure we will have to relocate, there has been much to think about.

“I’m leaving a rugby club in Bury that is going places and did part of me want to be part of the finished process? Perhaps our two paths will cross again in the not too distant future in National One.

“Old Albanians are a fantastic club, this is a great chance for me and I’ve weighed it all up and am looking forward to the challenge.”
