BURY ended an Eton Manor run of ten consecutive home wins with a gritty hard-working victory, played in driving rain.
Looking rusty after their enforced break, Bury were under pressure from the kick off, but fine defence kept Manor at bay.
Eggers finally managed to break free and his 60 yard break resulted in a penalty for a high tackle. Will Martin successfully kicked it to give Bury the lead against the run of play.
Manor continued to pressure and crossed the line only to spill the ball. The Bury clearance was collected in midfield, and poor tackling allowed the swift Manor backs to cross in the corner.
The conversion attempt was unsuccessful. Warren Kearney then made a stunning 80 yard break only to be thwarted by a last-ditch tackle.
Bury then won the resulting line out allowing Tim Mann to break the defence and score, Martin collecting the extra two points.
The second half saw 40 minutes of attrition.
Manor had two players sent to the bin, but they had territorial advantage for most of the half, and narrowly missed with two penalty attempts.
BURY St Edmunds have been docked 25 points for fielding an ineligible player in a first XV match.
The incident happened in January when the club included an unregistered player and the senior playing committee at the club have totally accepted the decision.
The first XV, from being fourth in London 1 North, 15 points off leaders Thurrock, have now dropped to sixth-bottom.
The loss of points is a huge blow to the club’s promotion push and the focus will now be on trying to win back the Suffolk Cup and cementing their position in mid-table for the rest of this season.
