Bury Town boss Ben Chenery believes best is yet to come from impressive Blues side

Ben Chenery believes his Bury Town side still have more to offer, despite last Saturday’s 6-1 home win against Tilbury and the midweek victory at Norwich United.

The Blues avenged a 2-1 home defeat to the same opponents in the FA Cup and followed that result up with a 2-1 away win at Norwich in midweek.

Today, Bury, who find themselves in sixth position in Bostik North, are at home to an Aveley side currently sitting in the lower reaches of the fledgling table.

“We were very impressive against Tilbury in that 6-1 victory, having been disappointed to lose in the FA Cup, and we put right and few wrongs from that game.” said Chenery.

“We played with intensity and on the front foot and that is how I want my teams to play – it was probably one of the best team performances I have had as a managaer.

“We were then excellent away at Norwich United, that was different type of performance in terms of it being an away game – we were dogged and resolute.

“To take six points from six is pleasing but we are nowhere near the finished article.”

He added: “I don’t like to use the word ‘gel’ but it was the first time I have made wholesale changes to the side in the summer and we have got to adapt as a team.”

One blow for Chenery is the news that Ollie Hughes will be missing for the near future, having suffered a broken radius in his wrist during the game against Tilbury.

It is the third wrist injury that Hughes has sustained in a year, after sustaining two, both against Thamesmead Town, last season.

Chenery said of his three-goal striker: “It’s never ideal to lose a quality player like Ollie but we are hoping the injury isn’t as bad as we first feared.

“It is a shame though as he was back to his old self and things were going in the right direction.

“It doesn’t affect confidence in the squad but it does show how fragile your squad can be at times.”

Loan goalkeeper James Bradbrook, meanwhile, returned to Needham Market in the week, and played in their 2-0 defeat to Lowestoft, because of an injury to Danny Gay.
