World Cup fever hit Hardwick Primary School, in Bury St Edmunds, today, as pupils arrived in their patriotic England outfits and masks ready for the World Cup semi-final against Croatia.

Children, along with head Daryl Jones and football fanatic teacher Nick Wells, looked to the community centre adjoining the school as a lucky omen for tonight - renaming the Southgate Community Centre in honour of the England manager.

Gareth Southgate masks along with England flags and shirts were the order of the day ahead of the crucial clash at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium.

And children bought in a £1 each with the money going to the West Suffolk Hospital as a way of celebrating the 70th birthday of the NHS.

Mr Wells, who is Key Stage 2 leader at the school, said: “As soon as the final whistle went following Saturday’s match against Sweden we thought what we could do to celebrate 28 years since we made the World Cup semi final and to remember how special Italia 1990 was and to try and capture the childrens’ imagination.

“We are all hoping it’s going to be an historic day for the team.”
