POLICE have arrested a 48-year-old man on suspicion of murder after a man died in Bury St Edmunds last night.

Police were called at just before midnight by a member of the public stating there was a fight in progress near an address in Ashwell Road.

A spokesman said: “Officers were deployed immediately and discovered a collapsed man. The officers tried to revive the man, who is understood to be in his 40s, before he was conveyed to West Suffolk Hospital.

“The man was pronounced deceased a short while after arriving at the hospital.”

A man who was located near to the address in Ashwell Road was arrested on suspicion of murder.

The 48-year-old, from the Bury St Edmunds area, was taken to the town’s Police Investigation Centre where he will be questioned.

Police are now trying to locate the man’s next of kin. A post mortem examination is due to take place later this afternoon to try to ascertain the cause of death.

The cordon in Ashwell Road, which is currently blocking the road, could be in place for up to two days, police have warned. Forensics experts have been to the scene to carry out their work.

This morning, residents in the area have been left stunned by the incident, which has taken place in an area they say is generally a quiet, safe and will lit.

Police would like to hear from anyone who has information in relation to this incident.
