Detectives investigating a serious sexual assault in Bury St Edmunds at the start of the month have identified a suspect in connection with the incident.

The attack occurred between 4am and 4.15am on Sunday, June 3, in Cullum Road.

The victim – a 25-year-old woman – was walking back from the town centre, when she was pushed into some bushes near a stream and sexually assaulted.

She screamed out for help and members of the public came to her assistance, resulting in the offender running away.

Officers have been following a number of lines of enquiry in connection with this attack, including forensic and CCTV work.

As a result of these enquiries a suspect has been identified, however he left the United Kingdom the day after the attack took place, prior to coming to the attention of police.

He is now wanted by Suffolk Constabulary in connection with this incident and efforts are continuing to bring the individual back to the UK.

DCI Barry Byford, the senior investigating officer, said: “We have made excellent progress in this investigation and are grateful to all the members of the public who have assisted us with our enquiries.

“We have now identified a suspect for this attack and are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with it.

“Unfortunately the individual left the country before he became a person of interest to us, but we are now working to bring him back to the United Kingdom.”

Anyone with information about this attack is asked to contact West CID at Bury St Edmunds Police Station on 101, quoting reference 30248/18, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
