RESIDENTS are being encouraged to recycle their empty printer cartridges at special banks to help provide employment opportunities for adults with disabilities.
Eco Services Digital (formerly Services to Business) has teamed up with St Edmundsbury Borough Council to install the special recycling bins at nine sites in the area, including Asda, Waitrose and Sainsbury’s in Bury St Edmunds.
Andrew Akehurst, manager of Eco Services Digital, said: “I am asking everyone in Bury St Edmunds and villages to bring their empty printer cartridges to our easy to spot yellow recycling bins.
“We will use them to help give over 100 adults with disabilities all kinds of benefits through being employed.
“Worldwide an estimated 350 million cartridges are just thrown away a year.
“If we can get the empties in St Edmundsbury posted in our bins, we can maximise their value by sorting and passing them on into the appropriate recycling streams.”
Peter Stevens, cabinet member for environment at St Edmundsbury Borough Council, said: “I am sure that anyone who has paid for expensive printer cartridges would be pleased to know that they are passing on some of that value to a good cause, once the cartridge is used up.”
The bright yellow bins have been manufactured by Haldo Developments, which is based in the area.
