Suffolk is home to many picturesque landmarks, from Ickworth House in Bury St Edmunds to Southwold Lighthouse, and Landguard Fort in Felixstowe.

Suffolk is also known for its history – the most historic towns in the county are the Suffolk wool towns.

The Suffolk wool towns consist of Clare, Hadleigh, Lavenham, Long Melford, Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich, Kersey, Cavendish, and Sudbury.

They are some of the best-preserved historic towns and the prettiest villages in Suffolk.

Back in the 15th Century the Suffolk wool towns were among the richest in the country due to the trade.

Lavenham was once the 14th richest settlement in the country – it is often referred to as England’s best preserved medieval village, containing 340 listed buildings.

A trip to one of Suffolk’s wool towns could mean a stay in a 500-year-old hotel, an afternoon browsing independent shops in medieval buildings and maybe a visit to a stately home.
