POLICE were last night still hunting a man who allegedly attacked a 43-year-old with a hammer.
The incident happened in Oakes Close, in Bury St Edmunds, at about 3pm on Tuesday.
Although the police helicopter was sent up to join the search for the attacker, he was last night still at large.
The victim, who lives in Oakes Close, was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge with head and hand injuries. It is understood his mobile phone and money were stolen from him.
He has since been released from hospital and is said to be staying with a friend in the Bury area.
The incident has shocked the close-knit Howard estate community.
One resident who lives near to Oakes Close told how she first became aware of the incident when she spotted the police helicopter circling above the estate.
She said: “It is shocking and it just shows it doesn’t have to be night-time for something like this to happen.
“This happened in broad daylight.”
