A NOTORIOUS Suffolk conman who once got out of prison by forging release papers has been sent to crown court for punishment after admitting two frauds.
Magistrates in Bury St Edmunds told David Aves, of Bradfield St George, near Bury St Edmunds, they did not have strong enough sentencing powers to deal with him when he appeared yesterday.
Aves, 53, had admitted two separate counts of fraud at a previous court appearance. Aves has 15 convictions for 152 separate offences, the court heard.
Rosalind Cappleman told how, between November 2 and December 13 last year, Aves put an advert in a magazine selling dairy milking equipment. Thomas Johnson responded to the advert sending a cheque for £343. However, on December 10, Mr Johnson received a package containing ‘junk’, said Mrs Cappleman.
The second victim, Weston Arnold, paid £1,596 for dairy parlour parts. However, those parts never arrived. Both victims contacted the police.
Barrister Benjamin Waidhofer, for Aves, said his client was the sole carer for his 87-year-old mother adding: “He’s never had an opportunity for his offences to be dealt with head on with a sentence targeted at rehabilitation.”
He said the probation service was keen to work with Aves.
Magistrates referred the matter to crown court for sentencing.
