AVID cyclists are gearing up for a major riding event being staged in honour of a Suffolk businessman who died last year.
Brian Phillips, 51, from Horringer, near Bury St Edmunds, had been competing in a team time trial event in Italy when he collapsed and died in March.
At the time of his death he was riding for East Grinstead Cycling Club, in West Sussex, but he was also a member of the West Suffolk Wheelers cycling and triathlon club. Organisers of tomorrow’s West Suffolk Wheelers’ Suffolk Punch reliability trial have decided to dedicate the event in memory of Mr Phillips.
The reliability trial will feature three routes of 75, 60 and 36miles, each with different average speed categories.
Speaking about Mr Phillips, event organiser Justin Wallace said: “He was a regular supporter of Suffolk Punch and over the years never ceased to amaze us with his outstanding performances. Not only was Brian a superb athlete, he was also a thoroughly nice guy; always ready to help others with advice or the loan of equipment. He is sadly missed.”
Entry to the Suffolk Punch is £5 and registration is from 9am at the club’s HQ at the Priory School, in Mount Road, Bury St Edmunds.
