THE OFFICIAL launch of a blue plaque heritage trail is taking place today in Bury St Edmunds.
The English Heritage-backed plaques will honour three women – writer Norah Lofts, painter Rose Mead and artist Sybil Andrews, and four men – diarist James Oakes, collector Frederick Gershop-Parkington, architect Lewis Nockalls Cottingham and writer Charles Dickens.
Each of the seven either lived in Bury St Edmunds or stayed in the town during crucial parts of their careers.
Dickens was a regular visitor to the town, where he stayed at The Angel, and wrote in the Pickwick Papers of “a handsome little town, of thriving and cleanly appearance.”
A plaque honouring Dickens is being unveiled at The Angel this afternoon to officially launch the scheme.
