DRAFT plans for the future of the prestigious Abbey Gardens in Bury St Edmunds are set to go on display.
St Edmundsbury Borough Council has put in a bid for more than £1million in funding to the Heritage Lottery Fund to give the gardens a significant makeover. Among the raft of changes suggested is the removal of the bowling green and water garden and the moving of the tennis courts from their current location to the Eastgate Nurseries.
The borough council has consulted with people in the town about what changes they would like to see.
The outcome of those talks is a set of outline plans which will be displayed at the Apex building in Bury from 10am until 5pm from January 23 until 28.
Sara Mildmay-White, St Edmundsbury’s cabinet member for culture and sport, said: “I would like to thank everyone who has become involved in working to make sure the Abbey Gardens remain a delightful place for anyone to enjoy, and to the Abbey Gardens Friends in particular for their invaluable contribution. I am really pleased with the creative and enthusiastic response from so many individuals and groups.”
St Edmundsbury expects to hear back in July whether it has the nod to progress to fully costed plans.
