A 21-year-old man has been ordered to pay a cyclist more than £3,000 in compensation after breaking his cheekbone in a serious assault. 

Michael Peacock, of Cooper Lane in Nowton, was given a suspended sentence after pleading guilty to grievous bodily harm. 

The incident in Mill Lane, Bury St Edmunds, happened on September 7, 2022, when Peacock was a passenger in a car being driven by someone else.

He pushed a male cyclist off his push bike causing him to fall to the ground before he was seriously assaulted.

The 53-year-old victim sustained a broken cheekbone and jaw and was initially treated at West Suffolk Hospital before being transferred to Addenbrookes for immediate surgery, and had follow up surgery four months later. 

Peacock was arrested at the scene and subsequently charged. 

At Ipswich Crown Court, Peacock was sentenced to eight months in prison suspended for 24 months. 

He was also ordered to do 200 hours of community service and pay £3,500 in compensation to the victim at an earlier hearing.
