The long-serving headmaster of an independent school in west Suffolk has been dismissed from his role after an investigation found he committed gross misconduct.

Julian Johnson-Munday has left Culford School, near Bury St Edmunds, after a disciplinary process conducted by an independent lawyer.

Mr Johnson-Munday was suspended earlier this year "following receipt of a number of allegations", a letter issued to parents this week said.

The letter stated Mr Johnson-Munday "had breached a number of the school's internal policies in relation to the misuse of school funds and property and the treatment of members of staff".

The letter, signed by chair of governers Mark Donougher, added: "This was not a decision taken lightly and we are saddened by it.

"However, it was found that his actions constituted gross misconduct and a breach of trust that was incompatible with his leadership role.

"It is important to note that the allegations under investigation did not concern pupils and have not impacted the school's financial position which remains robust.

"We recognise that this has been an unsettling time for our community and we are sorry for the frustration this has caused.

"However, the investigation, disciplinary and appeal processes took time to complete.

"As we are sure you will appreciate, it would have been inappropriate and prejudicial to communicate about these matters until these processes had fully concluded."

Claire Bentley, Culford School's acting head, has been appointed as interim head until a permanent replacement for Mr Johnson-Munday has been appointed.

Rory Parker will become acting head of the prep school and Victoria Steers will be head of pre-prep.

Mr Donougher's letter added: "The governing body will work closely with Claire and the senior leadership team to ensure the continued smooth running of the school over this period, driven by our overarching mission to unlock the full potential of every pupil."
